About the International Adoption Association

The International Adoption Association, formerly the Irish Foreign Adoption Group, was formed in 1990 to provide help and guidance to parents who were intending to adopt abroad. Currently our membership comprises over 1200 families. Some have already adopted abroad and remain part of the group whilst most are parents who intend to adopt abroad. Whatever stage you are at - assessment, awaiting placement etc., our membership can help.

Our Objectives:

  • To promote Intercountry Adoption.
  • To provide information and support to people who are thinking of adopting abroad. We do this by:
    • Providing an Information and Education programme
    • Publishing a Quarterly Newsletter
    • Moderating a Yahoo Members Group
    • Maintaining a Contact Register of Pre- and Post Adoptive families
  • To ensure that the legislative and administrative frameworks are fair to prospective adopters, adoptive parents and their children.

Current Major Topics:

  • Pending publication of the Irish Adoption Bill to ratify the "Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption"
  • Waiting time for assessment
  • Development of Post Adoption Services

For membership details, follow the instructions on the Membership page.
