Members Forums & Mailing Lists

The IAA maintains an email-based discussion list for members only. The list is hosted by Yahoo at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/iaa-ireland/.

Joining the list

To join the list, send an email to iaa-ireland-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Please include your name and address in the body of the email. This will speed up processing of your request.

Your membership request will be forwarded to the list administrator. Note that you must have already paid your IAA membership fee before you will be added to the list. It generally takes a week or so to process your request.

Managing list membership options

If you are a member, you can choose to view messages in any of three different ways.

  • By receiving every message as it is sent (this is the default).
  • By receiving a daily digest of all messages sent.
  • By going to the website and viewing the messages online.

You must register with Yahoo in order to manage your membership settings. Registration is free. To manage your settings, do the following.

  1. Using your web browser, sign in to Yahoo.
  2. Go to the iaa-ireland group page (click the link under your My Groups heading).
  3. Click the "Edit My Membership" link in the top right corner.
  4. Select your preferred option under the Message Delivery heading.
  5. Click the "Save Changes" button.

Viruses and spam

The IAA mailing list is configured to prevent any emails with attachments being sent to members. This means that the list itself cannot be used to propagate virus-infected emails.

However, when a member posts to the list, the message is sent to all members, and therefore the senders' email address is included in the recipients inbox, and possibly also their email address book.

If that recipients' email is later infected with a virus, the virus will use the address book and/or inbox to identify other email addresses to which it can send itself. Because IAA members email addresses are present, they are then sent the virus.

It may seem that the virus is sent by the Yahoo mailing list, but this is not the case. The virus is simply hiding itself by using a false 'From' address, in the hope that you will therefore trust the email and open it.

There are a number of workarounds to the virus problem.

  • Install anti-virus software on your PC. This software detects most viruses, and prevents you from opening them.
  • Install anti-spam software on your PC. This software deletes much of the spam email that has become a huge problem over the last year, some of which now also include virus attachments.
  • Do not use the Microsoft Outlook Express email client.

It is not possible to configure Outlook Express to stop viruses, so you could consider changing to another email client application, such as Microsoft Outlook, Eudora (cf. www.eudora.com), or the Mozilla web browser, which also has a built-in email client
